She is also the Director of Clinical Training (DCT) and Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) for the Department’s Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychological Science. Previously, Dr. Bufferd was Assistant then Associate Professor of Psychology at California State University San Marcos from 2012-2019. Dr. Bufferd earned her B.S. in Human Development at Cornell University in 2003. From 2003-2005, she was a research study coordinator in the Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at Columbia University. Dr. Bufferd received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Stony Brook University in 2012 under the mentorship of Dr. Daniel Klein. During graduate school, she was a recipient of a five year Graduate Council Fellowship and a three year NIMH National Research Service Award fellowship (F31 MH084444). Dr. Bufferd completed her predoctoral internship at the Yale University School of Medicine in 2011. Along with her team, Dr Bufferd conducts research on the assessment and predictors of early-emerging psychopathology and characterizing the spectrum of normative to pathological emotional development in early childhood relevant to risk for anxiety, mood dysregulation, and other forms of psychopathology (e.g., eating disorders). We continue to measure children’s daily emotions and behaviors using parent-reported diaries. Given the importance of children’s context in understanding risk, we also examine parents’ daily emotions and behaviors. We will also assess children’s behavior and parent-child interactions using structured laboratory observations. In addition to assessing children’s behavior and their context via parents’ behavior, it is also important to assess factors that may influence parents’, and children’s, behavior. One such factor is daily sleep, which is a construct with broad-ranging implications across physiological and psychological systems for both children and their parents. In the present study, we assess children’s and parents’ daily sleep using sleep actigraphy watches as well as parent-report daily diary. Finally, stress is an additional factor that can influence the constructs of interest in the present study. In addition to assessing child and family stressors via parent report, children’s and parents’ physiological stress response is indexed through the measurement of hair cortisol concentrations (HCC). This approach, which includes inconspicuously cutting strands of hair from the back of the head, is a non-invasive method for obtaining physiological levels of long-term stress and complements parent report by examining one aspect of the physiological response to stress. Despite advances in developmental psychopathology research, an important question remains: how can we distinguish clinically significant from developmentally typical behavior? Anxiety and mood dysregulation (e.g., separation anxiety, irritability, sadness) are symptoms of disorders, but are also very common and developmentally normative behaviors in young children. The level at which such behaviors may be clinically significant is largely unknown. This work seeks to generate empirically-derived, developmentally sensitive norms to help child practitioners and parents distinguish typical behavior from risk for persistent, impairing conditions. We developed a novel application of the daily diary approach to assess the frequency, duration, and contexts of 3-5-year-old children’s daily anxiety and mood behaviors (N = 609; Bufferd et al., in press). In addition, we assessed familial (e.g., parent-child interactions, stressors) and physiological (acute [salivary cortisol] and long-term [hair cortisol] stress activity; inflammatory markers) correlates of emotional difficulties in a subsample (n = 205) alongside diary parameters to identify the level of behavior that may be problematic. The longitudinal follow-up study is currently underway to assess children’s functioning at ages 6-8, which is a vital next step to clarify variation in behavior in preschool age that increases risk for psychopathology in early school age. Although some of our plans were derailed due to the pandemic, we have been able to assess children’s daily behavior using the daily diary as well as parent-reported child functioning using diagnostic interviews.
